Baby’s (or child’s) First Haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop in Walt Disney World is one of my FAVORITE Disney Experiences! I waited four and a half years for my youngest to get her first haircut at Walt Disney World. Her hair grew long and beautiful with little innocent curls at the end. I referred to her as my little Rapunzel and enjoyed those little curls to their fullest, because I knew once she had her first haircut, they’d be gone forever. What better way to say goodbye to those curls than at the happiest place on earth?
I made the appointment for the Harmony Barber Shop several months in advance because I knew exactly when we wanted to do it. I decided on the last day of our vacation (2nd Magic Kingdom day of the trip) and planned for an afternoon visit right after lunch time, but well before the 3 o’clock parade (we didn’t want to become trapped because of the parade). I also made appointments for our 2 other daughters, who were both excited to have their hair done at Disney.
For the youngest, I made sure to let them know that it would be her first haircut and that I wanted the special package for “baby’s” first haircut. This included the haircut, glitter in her hair, a special certificate, a keepsake lock of her hair, and (my favorite) these super cute Mickey ears! All for only $25 (as of January 2017)!! Seriously an amazing deal!
Since the ears were my favorite, when she was done we headed just outside the door into the shade. I focused on the ears and had her look at her toes. It was a hot day and they put her hair up in a ponytail, so I just tilted the ears to the side a little. It was perfect for a photo, but she opted to take them off for most of the afternoon. In this photo, three important things were included: the Mickey ears, the glitter in her hair and her Rapunzel costume dress. This was with my “fancy” camera, but I took almost an identical photo with my phone to send to family right away.
This brings me to my next photo tip, which is the details. She made sure to wear her Rapunzel dress the day of her haircut, so I wanted to make sure I got a quick close-up shot of it.
Her Harmony Barber Shop hairstylist was AMAZING. So sweet and gentle. Our little one was a little bit nervous, but mostly excited. Our hairstylist walked her through what she was going to do and made the whole experience great! The cape was really brightly colored and I felt that finishing this image as a black and white photo would help keep that old-time barber shop look.
A first haircut is a big deal for your little one! Think of how big that chair must feel to them. Get down low and try to see things from their perspective!
The glitter…oh, the glitter. I think it took nearly 3 weeks for it to all come out. We thought it was falling out, but no. It was just working it’s way to the scalp. Even though glitter is generally a pain, I could totally live with it because of the joy it brought out in these girls (and I didn’t have to pay the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique price!) Standing in the shade where there was plenty of light made the glitter sparkle just right for this photo.
And finally, we wanted to document the setting which was of course the Harmony Barber Shop. It was insanely sunny that day, but we still took a quick picture of her in front of the shop. The best tip I have for you here is to be PATIENT. People are in and out of this shop almost constantly. If you’re patient, you’ll be able to get a quick picture without anyone in the background. It really does make all the difference!
Let us know if you’ve been to the Harmony Barber shop and, as always, we’d LOVE for you to share your pictures with us! If you have any questions about our experience, please don’t hesitate to ask!
